The key difference was the ability to concentrate fire power which came with only the unit bases blocking fire (rather than an occupied square). The simplification in the combat mechanism worked well and would be fine with a grid. Your question has made me think about trying the updated rules with squares again. The change I would make is to allow units to fire through occupied squares (when occupied by one unit) to allow for the concentration of fire power.
