Thinking about rules again

I'm currently reading "Designing Wargames - Introduction" by George Phillies. I'm halfway through the book, and while it is about board wargaming, it has caused me to reassess some of my rules for grid based SFI wargames. As I use a grid for wargaming it could be said I'm board wargaming with miniatures, my motivation to move to a grid was I got frustrated with having to measure move distances and combat ranges.

Caracalla Campaign Finale

The campaign on Caracalla was drawing to a close with the Sons of the Sword (Space Marines) closing in on the Orc stronghold.

The assault begins with an exchange of fire with first blood going to the Orcs.

Space Marine reserves start to arrive and begin to take a toll on the Orcs.

The arrival of air support and a terminator unit provided a timely counter attack.

The Orcs threw their reserves into a flank attack.

While the battle appeared to be in the balance, the fire power of the Marines was the decisive factors and won the day for them.

With this battle and the taking of the Orc stronghold was the end of the campaign.

I'm slowly building up my Chaos force and plan to strengthen it with some recent purchases over the next few weeks.

Caracalla Campaign Part 5

The fifth battle of the Caracalla campaign was a small scale battle with five units. It would have been four units, had not each side successfully rolled for a reserve units. In the case of the space marines this meant a Planetary Defence Force unit. The battle had both sides charging into the centre where most of the objectives randomly ended up. The Space Marines fire power was telling in the first few moves and combined with the timely arrival of the Assault Marines, they ended up with a comfortable win. Here are some pictures of the game.

The Dread Knight is destroyed, but not before attracting a lot for fire and reducing Orc numbers.

The remaining Space Marine forces were able to lay down some punishing fire as the Orcs focused on the Dread Knight.

The arrival of the Assault Marines put pay to possible Orc comeback and the Sons of the Sword had their victory. Now they could move on the Orc base in the mountains.

Caracalla campaign part 4

Following their previous defeat at the hands of the Orcs, a new Space Marine leader was appointed to replace the severely wounded Commander Enbane.

Captain Phoras with is command squad and command vehicle assess their position prior to the battle.

The battle was fought over hilly terrain. The Marines took up position with a devastator squad on the hill which would allow them an additional zone when shooting.

The Orc Morkanaut led the charge on the Space Marine positions on their left flank and was quickly put out of action. Taking advantage of the confusion the command squad advanced and took up position with its accompanying Razorback in the trees.

The Orc onslaught continued as they charged into the Space Marine held wood supported by a group of Killa Kans.

Fighting was fierce and a squad of jet bikes provided timely support to the hard pressed command squad.

The loss of the Dread-Knight was a blow to the Space Marines and the battle was evenly poised.

On the right  flank a tactical squad took up position and engaged the 'eavy boys while seeking cover amongst a rock outcrop.

Captain Phoras mounted up in the Razorback moved into the centre to occupy an objective zone, its twin linked auto cannons blasting away at nearby Orcs.

Back on the left flank the Orc attack started to falter as fire from the devastator squad which destroyed the Killa Kans. After seeing off the 'eavy team the tactical squad mounted up on a Rhino and with other Space Marine vehicles killed of the remaining Orcs. The victory laurels went to Captain Phoras.
