A generic scenic backboard

A few weeks back I made a Japanese themed scenic backboard using water colours and caulk pastels. I had a lot of fun making it. This weekend I decided to make another, a more generic scenic backboard which can be used for other games. Using pastels is dusty job best done outside and it was a nice sunny day for being outside. This time I just used caulk pastels on a light grey foam board.

The newly created backboard

A Napoleonic is game underway with the backboard.

An ACW game with the backboard

The backboard uses two pieces of foam board 9 inches by 24 inches. I use masking tape to hold the two pieces together.

  1. That works a treat Peter. It's something I keep meaning to do, once I have a more dedicated gaming and storage area.

    1. Thanks. I am fortunate to have a dedicated room for wargaming.

  2. Very nice work...How do you attach them to the table?

    1. Thank you. The backboard is very light and I can just prop it up with a piece of wood or a book.

  3. Like Steve J, it's something I keep meaning to get round to but never do. You must stop showing us all up.

    1. Backboards are helpful when taking photographs, rather than practical wargaming needs. I also wanted to do something different rather than getting another unit of samurai onto the painting table.

  7. Excellent work!

A backboard does add a lot to a game and esp to pictures. Doing a proper one is "on my list".

  9. I have little artistic talent, so I use a pre printed model railway backscene.

    1. Yes, they would work out well and seem to be reasonably priced too.

  10. Very cool. I also have little to no artistic talent. I was going to ask, can I have a copy? But perhaps the pre-printed model railway back scenes are a better way to go.

    1. Thanks. The next scene for a backboard will be some alien terrain for a sci-fi game.
