The next painting project has started

I have opted for my next painting project to go with a Fantasy theme. I have a good few Orks and Goblins already painted, these were done many years ago to oppose my son's Wood Elves when he used to play Warhammer. Since then they have been sitting in a box and now is the time to get them on to the tabletop with an opposing army, or two.

The first fantasy unit based.

I have decided to rebase them on 3x3 inch MDF bases I have cut. This size base will suit most units and I can get between 3 to 4 of these large 28mm figures on a base.

After many years stored away the Orks and Goblins see the light of day.

I also have an Age of Sigmar starter box from a few years ago to add into the mix. These will require painting. There are not many of them and I am starting to see what other units I may need to buy to increase the number of units to oppose the Orks. I quite like to look of the Mantic figures as they have the more traditional looking elves and dwarves.

  1. And I was expecting some Minifigs Goblins from Mythical Earth, Valley of the Four Winds or Aureola Rococo ranges. :o(

    1. No classic figures this time, all a bit more main-stream this time with Games Workshop.

  2. Lovely models and the bases are big enough to allow the figures to breathe properly.

  3. Wait ,did I miss the parade? Oh you skipped it. It’s bad hobby mojo to skip the parade. Each new unit will be cursed with rolling 1s! 😀

  5. Nowadays these Orcs seem like 'classic' offerings, but they are less than 20 years old! The big bases were a treat for them. I still have some Valley of the Four Winds figures in the attic somewhere, plus some old Ral Partha and probably Minifigs figures too. I really should find them and take some photos...

    1. I do like these Orcs, which seem to have now been superseded by some slightly different models which are a bit skinnier. Anyway, it is always enjoyable, and nostalgic, getting the old models out and in use.

  6. Starting with most of the troops painted for one side is a good thing!
    Your medieval rules with a few modifications would seem to be a good starting point, too!

    1. It certainly will give a kick start to the project. The question is how to build magic and heroes/villans into the rules.

Magic can either be destructive, so in one way or another akin to missile fire, or it can bend the rules - alter movement (slow or haste a unit(s), combat (improve/decrease combat odds), morale ("heal hits"), or effect card play/sequence. If you want to get really fancy, summon a monster. With simple rules, that is more than enough options!

    3. I suppose magic could potentially alter terrain set up somewhat as well...If so, have to keep it a very simple modification of the system.

    4. My initial thoughts are a magician has a deck of cards with a set number of spells and blanks cards. The more inexperience the magician, the more blank cards. They are shuffled and placed face down and drawn as spells are cast. I like your ideas of terrain and other effects.
