Ancient project and view of units completed to date

I am being a bit lazy today from a blogging perspective anyway. I should be doing the game report from the WW2 Western Desert campaign, but game reports always take a bit of time to do, and after the usual weekend shopping and gardening activities I lack the motivation. Instead here is a quick post on recent my ancient unit painting progress and a view of the Carthaginian army completed to date.

Three more unit painted since my last post.

As I had cleared the tabletop of a WW2 Western Desert game it was a good opportunity to see how all the completed Carthaginians look setup. I have yet to paint three more Carthaginian cavalry units, three Celtic infantry, three skirmish units, and one more elephant unit.

A view of the Carthaginian army. All units are on 3x4 inch bases.

All the Ancient models are HaT figures which are working out really well and have a good range of units for this period.

  1. They look very impressive all arrayed for battle Peter. AAR's are surpisingly time consuming with my recent effort taking around 2 hours. I've tried keeping them as simple as possible, but it's hard to strike a balance on giving the right amount of info on the action.

    1. Thank you. It is surprising how long it takes to do a AAR, they sometimes take longer than the game itself.

  2. Fab! I had a go a few years ago with the Hat range: they are great figures but it became another victim of my butterfly mind. I still have a war elephant in a display cabinet, though. It was painted by the wife!

  3. That is excellent progress and the decision to go with the big bases is fully vindicated.

    1. Thank you. Unit basing has 12 figures for infantry, 6 for heavy cavalry, 9 for skirmishers, and 4 for light cavalry. The aim is to have 200 plus figures per side in a game.

  4. Peter, your Carthaginian army has grown very quickly! This is a sizable force to be reckoned with. Great job!

    1. Thanks. I am looking forward to tackling the Roman army soon. I am trying to chip away at the figures with two units per week.

    1. Thank you. It's a case of slow and steady, and good motivation to get all the units out at once.

  7. That's a pretty impressive army you've assembled in a very short time - you deserve a rest. Are you going for a Republican Roman Army next? The Zvezda figures for that look gorgeous.

    1. I will definitely moving on to the Romans next. I have already purchased the HaT figures. I will have to look out for Zvezda figures for future projects.

  8. This project is taking shape quickly and very nicely!
My now 5 year old Grandson saw my table set up and mentioned painting something. I will have to keep HAT figures and other plastics in mind when that takes more definite shape!

    1. Thank you. The good old plastics remain a good entry level option.

  9. Really great looking ancient figures Peter, I especially like the elephants (of course!). I can see why the HaT ranges are so popular.

    1. This is the first time I have used HaT figures and I am impressed. They are certainly value for money for a wargamer. I do like the elephants too.
