A very brief post as I have a few jobs to do today, but yesterday I painted the docks and made a few pillboxes to complete the terrain for my St. Nazaire Raid game. I now need to add some ships and a few Airfix commandos to my British WW2 forces.

My first game could be in a few weeks once a few units and ships are added |
Here are some pictures of the tabletop laid out...

The tabletop for St. Nazaire Raid |

The Old Mole and re-embarkment point |

The target dock |

The winding house and pump house, targets for demolition. If you look closely you can see a few lines drawn on to show the build up areas. |
Your layout is superb! Nice work.
ReplyDeleteThank you. There were moments at the beginning of the project where I wondered what I was doing.
DeleteLooks great!
ReplyDeleteWill you be able to reuse some of the components?
Thanks. I will be reusing the factories, although given the number I may repaint some as houses. The gun emplacements and search lights will be kept for other commando raid games. As for the docks themselves, they may get repurposed as hills.
DeleteAh that works a treat. Very clear style. Practical too.
ReplyDeleteThe searchlights are very effective.
I am hoping the terrain will be easy to wargame on and not get too much in the way. Thanks.
DeleteSuperb conception and execution - I love the enthusiasm that has gone behind this, the game will be a thrill.
ReplyDeleteVery happy it is completed. I had a few doubts at the start. One of the advantages of a blog is having said you are doing something, it does motivate you to complete projects.
DeleteFantastic project Peter.
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly.
DeleteJust love the whole look of this table and fascinating to see how you went about making everything. Really looking forward to seeing it in action as it were:)
ReplyDeleteIt was been interesting project to do. I have tried to use off-cuts of wood to keep the costs to a minimum.
DeleteThat looks absolutaely amazing.
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly. One of the advantages of doing all the terrain at once is you get consistency in the overall look.
DeleteReally great looking table. The game will look wonderful.
ReplyDeleteThank you. When I do the game most photos will be black and white as the green flocked bases look a bit out of place.
DeletePeter, I had a look on Google Earth and there is still open ground with scrub where you have put the vegetation so I was clearly wrong in my earlier CommNet about it being to open. Looking at the satellite images though I think it would benefit from some roads to break up the grey a bit. Also, the real port has a lot of clutter, vehicle parks, stacks of cargo, etc. ...perhaps?
ReplyDeleteThanks, I will probably set it up as scrub. As for roads I may use some chalk pastels to draw them on when it comes to playing the game.
DeleteLooks excellent completed. I await the game write up and photos.
ReplyDeleteAlmost there, just need to find the time to plan how to do the ships. Thank you.
DeleteA nice set-up, I'm looking forward to the game report.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I am pondering some additional rule mechanisms.
DeleteA superb layout! I’m looking forward to reading the battle report when you write it.
ReplyDeleteAll the best,
Bob
Thanks Bob. A few Airfix commandos have now made there way to the painting table as the forces are prepared for the game.
ReplyDeleteFantastic work Peter. I'm really looking forward to the game!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I am eager to finish the ships and commandos so I can start the game.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful setup! It reminds me of that old PC game Hidden & Dangerous. In it you lead a team of SAS operatives during WW2 in a campaign against the Germans. I swear this layout reminds me of a mishmash of the various missions from the game.
ReplyDeleteThank you. The simple block building approach would be similar to those early PC games.
DeleteLooks great! Just shows wht can be home-built with some talent and innovation.
ReplyDeleteThank you kindly. It has been fun to make this terrain.
