A mounted Samurai unit completed

I am still working through painting the different unit types for my Samurai project. This week it was a unit of mounted Samurai with retainers. The simple colour palette of blues and grey is working out well for these figures and my painting style is just blocks of colour.

Completed mounted Samurai.

I bought these Miniatures Figurines S Range Samurai figures secondhand a while ago. The horses did not come with any tassels. A look at the Caliver Book site, where some of the S range can still be purchased, showed Samurai horses can no longer be purchased due to a missing mould. To address the lack of decorative tassels I added them using Green Stuff.

An Ashigaru katana was converted to carry a banner using wire and painters masking tape which sticks nicely together when folded around the wire. No messy glue or waiting for the glue to dry.

Green Stuff is applied to create tassels.

    1. Thanks. I find the masking tape to be really quick and easy for banners and flags.

  2. This is a great project, Peter! I am considering bringing my collection out for a remote game but which rules to use?

    1. It will be interesting to see which rulesets you use. I you need number I would be more than happy to participate. As for rules I have been looking an a Lion Rampant version and also Never Mind the Billhooks could be one to convert.

    2. Don't know the rules myself but Peter Pig does a Samurai rule set which I assume like most of their rules is grid-based. They also usually try hard to put period specific character.

  3. And what fiendish campaign system do you have in mind for these fellows?

    1. Lol. I am tempted to repurpose the ECW area campaign approach I used a couple of yours ago.

    1. The rules will be an interesting challenge with the mixing of figure types, eg bows, spears, and arquebus. I am currently reading the Never Mind the Billhooks rules for ideas and possible adaption.

  5. They look very nice. I must get into using green stuff. My only experience is with milliput. I'm not sure how long your masking tape banners will last. Don't you find it loses it's stickness after a while? It might depend on what kind of paint you use. (Horrible memories of of several large scratch built Barsoomian Airboats falling to pieces when spaypainted as the solvent in the spray dissolved the glue on the masking tape I'd used in abundance to create layers of detail!)

    1. Hi Jon, I have used making tape flags and banners for a few years now. I tend to buy the good quality tape, then use PVA glue to seal, finishing off with acrylic paint and PVA again. Fortunately, no issues so far. Cheers, Peter
