While I have happily embarked on my WW1 Palestine Campaign, I still need a simple painting project to mix up the wargaming aspects of gaming and painting. Over the last year or so I have been squirrelling away a number of second-hand 25mm medieval Minifigs purchases which will make for a good painting project. The objective of these medieval purchases is to increase the size of my units from one base to two bases. This is because I am increasingly liking the tabletop aesthetics of fewer but larger units in my games.
|
Current single base units with 11-12 figures. |
|
Planned units with two bases. |
I expect to add another 8-10 bases to my existing armies to allow me to field 6-8 units of various compositions that fit with army lists from One-Hour Wargaming and Ancient and Medieval Wargaming.
|
All the bases removed, placed into the tin bucket, and paint stripper added. |
|
After a week in the paint stripper they are washed. |
The last WW1 unit I recently completed was a mountain gun unit for the turks.

Before getting back to the next WW1 campaign game I snuck in a Samurai pike and arquebus game.

A close look at the defences |
All in all quite a bit of wargaming activity was achieved this week. This was aided by my working week having dropped to 4 days a week, as I gradually work my way into retirement.
Congratulations on a number of fronts! First, slipping into retirement mode gently sounds a reasonable way to go. Second, a new project on the horizon. Good! Doubly good because your basing looks suitable for Impetvs.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I am hoping to gradually get used to retirement over the next couple of years. There will be no pressure to get the Minifigs done and off the painting table as I am otherwise occupied with gaming the WW1 campaign.
DeleteBasically I concur with Jon's comment above! The Samurai game does look really good too:).
ReplyDeleteThanks, I do like getting the samurai armies on to the tabletop with all their banners.
DeleteWhile personally a fan of more smaller units, your approach looks great and has the advantage of faster resolution and suitability for use with the OHW scenarios, both big plusses.
ReplyDeleteI have been trying to ease into retirement the past year, which was an epic failure - wound up working as much as before despite nominally cutting back on my hours. I will cut back (on paper, at least), another half day to 3 nominal days; hopefully I wont wind up working too much more than 4 days in reality; we'll see!
Fortunately my job is not so demanding and my 4 days is just that and no more. Good luck with your step down in hours.
DeleteWow that was brutal! I thought the medievals were well enough painted to start with. One thought with small numbers of large units in the period is how to handle things like crossbows and archers who would not be expected to fight by themselves but integrated with other troops. Have you given that one some thought or is it already covered in the OHW?
ReplyDeleteA few of the units were well painted, but I would much rather start from scratch for consistency of look. The mixed units is not covered in OHW or AMW from memory, but if I use Never Mind the Billhooks I will mix the bases.
DeleteMinis look great Peter! And excellent news on working 4 days per week. I am very jealous!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I am looking forward to the extra day each week.
DeleteYour Samurai game looks very interesting. I like the houses and scenery a lot. Cheers, Karl
ReplyDeleteThank you Karl, all the scenery and backboard has been scratch built.
DeleteWell done. It looks fantastic!
Deletecongrats on achieving your retirement goals. I turn 65 in Sept and plan on retiring Dec 30. Not only am I counting the days, but the hours as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks. I can understand the counting down of time.
DeleteCan thoroughly recommend “Never Mind The Billhooks”.
ReplyDeleteCounting down the weeks myself - will switch to days for the last three months...
Thanks for the tip. I have a copy of Never Mind the Billhooks and I really like the activation approach and the use of Battles. The amount of dice used for combat I find frustrating.
DeleteFor Wars of the Roses, consider Test of Resolve - there will be a post top my blog on those rules in the next few days, but there is already a detailed walk-through of a game on my blog as well.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tip. I was able to find you detailed game walk-through. Very interesting with its use of cards and D12.
