Some medieval crossbow men and a game arrives

Not a lot to post about this weekend due to being busy with other commitments, but I did manage to paint a couple of bases of Medieval crossbow men. A few weeks ago I purchased a few additional Minifig crossbow men to make up a complete unit. All my spare medieval figures are now painted.

A unit of crossbow men - two bases make up a unit.

On the gaming side of things I was able to pick up a secondhand copy of the Battle Cry game. As a bonus I was able to purchase it a in Australia and avoided costly postage.

A recent purchase

I am now looking forward to some wargaming time soon.

  1. Another fine unit there Peter and I immediately recognised those figures, as I had one or two that were used in our D&D games way back in the mists of time (ie 1970's!).

    1. Half of those figures had a 1970's vintage.

  2. Excellent work on the crossbowmen. I do seem to remember selling battle cry a while back myself lol

    1. Thanks. I have been patiently waiting for a reasonably priced game without a hefty postage add-on.

  3. Congratulations on the acquisition of Battle Cry (in the 150th anniversary edition to boot). It took me several attempts and perseverance to get my copy. I kept getting outbid by bid nabbers on eBay and then when I managed to get a copy at a reasonable price, the useless couriers lost it! I eventually got another copy after that, but before that despaired that I would ever get hold on the game.

    1. It took me a few months of keeping an eye to until a suitable game appeared. Having the 150th edition was a bonus.

  4. The crossbowmen look grand Peter and Battle Cry is a smashing game with loads of scenarios. I once spent a month playing them all and had a great time.

  5. Crossbowmen look as does Battle Cry. Why I love Commands and Colors, I have yet to try Battle Cry.

  6. You can never go wrong with a unit or two of crossbowmen. I bought some for my Lion Rampant gaming and they're useful chaps.

    1. Good to hear, I am sure they will be involved in a game or two of Loin Rampant.

    2. "Loin Rampant"? Ooh-err, sounds a bit rude...

  7. I like those crossbow men. Painted up nicely, and well based. I like the fact there is a man-at-arms on each base to provide a bit of backbone.

    1. Hi Chris. I like having one or two men-at-arms mixed in as their company commander.

  8. Always satisfying to make up a new unit out of (mostly) spare figures!
    Good gaming!

    1. It was all too tempting, I just could not leave half a unit in the box unpainted.

  9. I like the latest crossbow units and applaud the completion of all your medieval figures - not sure I ever get anything 100% completed like that.

    1. For the moment the medievals are done from a figure perspective. I am thinking ahead now for some siege games.

  10. Nice looking unit there. Can here the twang of the crossbows.
Battle cry with 15mm ACW troops on hex terrain is the best business. 😀

  11. Love Minifigs apart from the bendy Spears. My armies are all Minifigs, Lamming and Hinchcliffe...new figures don't have that charm

    Love this blog

    1. Hi Pete. Glad you are enjoying the blog. I do prefer the traditional 25mm figures too. The new Minifigs seem to come with separate weapons which is nice. I preferred the Hinchcliffe ECW pikemen with wire for pikes, although the pikes could give fingers a sharp jab.

    2. My first wargaming figures were ECW minifigs
Painted in humbrol enamels and gloss varnished

For old times sake I ordered some more but with new wire pikes

I too have been impaled on a pike block

  12. Congratulations on getting Battle Cry. I got the first version, where artillery took two hits. I really like the artillery in the 150th edition.

  13. Very nicely painted crossbows Peter. A good variety of figures as well.
Well done on getting the game. I always think anything sold in Australia has less chance of bids from overseas due to postage. So sometimes it can go in our favour. 😊

    1. I do like the option to mix up the figure poses on a base when I can, certainly for the ancient and medieval periods.
